Falls Church: Home at Lake Barcroft is an art show inside, out

On a weekend this November, about 500 people attended the Festival of the Arts at 6364 Lakeview Drive. They saw modern works on display in a new contemporary home for sale.

The combined exhibit and open house featured works by more than 20 artists, including many from the surrounding community. A wide selection of their works still is on display and may be purchased with the home, where the items are carefully placed to harmonize with the surroundings.

The home itself could be called a work of modern art, with a striking exterior incorporating an angular mahogany bay window with white HardiPlank walls and brick steps. The two-car front garage is an integral part of the design.

The house is designed to take full advantage of the surrounding tall trees and Lake Barcroft behind them. The property includes a private dock.

On the right, the foyer opens to the den, where an angular display shelf seems inspired by the works of Modrian. The winding black stairs beside it form an exciting contrast. Both are set off by the light-colored hardwood floors that continue throughout the house.

Facing the foyer, the living room's wall of windows provides a wide view of the tall trees. On closer view, the same windows also look down on the lake itself. A fireplace stands against the right wall, facing the dining area and the kitchen beyond, in an open floor plan that distinguishes the contemporary home.

The kitchen offers stainless-steel Viking appliances, stone countertops and a very long breakfast bar and sink, as well as another wall of windows. Expansive windows throughout the house create the spirit of indoor-outdoor living, another contemporary design theme.

Next to the stairway, a powder room and optional elevator space face the garage entrance. The upper stairwell faces a vertical wall of windows for another view of the wooded expanse.

The second-story hallway faces a red Japanese maple poised on the front lawn. At the opposite end of the hall, the master bedroom and sitting area both provide walls of windows overlooking the lake, plus a fireplace. The master bath faces the walk-in closet.

Two other bedrooms have their own baths, with a Juliet balcony between them, providing yet another striking view. An additional den-or fourth bedroom-stands beside the stairs.

Another bedroom and bath are on the lower level, where the deck leads down to the private dock. The tiled recreation room features a fireplace. A gym or sitting room, a theater and an office share the area, with space for a kitchenette or wet bar.

In the same contemporary spirit, the house was designed with the environment in mind. The windows conserve energy by providing natural light, in addition to the views of the surrounding trees that were carefully preserved during the construction. Energy Star windows, upgraded insulation, Trex decking with recycled materials, engineered lumber framing and fast-growing, farmed mahogany are among the other features that add a sense of ecological concern to the excitement of the home.
